Independence Day concert @ GCC

Rain or Shine!
Garrett College Auditorium in case of rain
FREE (donations invited)

A true celebration of patriotism the Garrett County way! Join us for the second annual concert featuring BOTH the Garrett Community Concert Band and the Garrett Choral Society.
Round out the evening with the perfect spot to view the community fireworks display immediately following the concert.
Garrett Community Concert Band is relatively new, formed in May of 2000, entirely as a volunteer group, under the guidance of a very accomplished local musician. Starting with its Fourth of July premier performance in 2000, it has presented three concerts a year. Members include people from all walks, including businessmen, teachers, homemakers, retirees and high school and college students. It is strictly a volunteer organization.

The Garrett Choral Society is a community chorus open to all singers--non-auditioned. The society's concert season includes a holiday concert in December, a Spring Concert, and other special presentations. The organization has quite an extensive list of repertoire that includes many major works. The director rarely needs to hire soloists - they come right from the choir! The society's artistic director is Julie S. Turrentine; the founding director is Nancy K. Learey; the accompanist is Lynn Grimm.

33rd Grantsville Days June 25-27 2010

In 1977 the Grantsville Business Association came together to create an event that would encourage local organizations to work jointly to sponsor a weekend of fellowship for the community.  It was envisioned as a non-commercial means for of fund-raising for the participating organizations.
That tradition has contiued to the present day, separating Grantsville Days from other events that allow commercial food vendors.

Marcellus Shale Documentary To Air On HBO

A new documentary on drilling natural gas in the Marcellus Shale area which includes all of Garrett County on HBO tonight, June 21, 2010 at 9:00pm.

. If you are predisposed to distrust big business and the bureaucrats who regulate it, then “Gasland,” a soberly muckracking film about the health and environmental dangers of the current nationwide rush to drill for natural gas, will light a flame in you. It might resemble the flames Mr. Fox films sprouting from people’s kitchen faucets or from the surfaces of polluted creeks, in places where methane has turned water into a fire hazard.

First Tomato Of The Season

MOW, SOW, GROW

Today I was dreaming of that first BLT of the season. This years will of course be on home baked bread. Bacon from a local 4-H project. Mayo made from local fresh eggs. Lettuce and tomato from the garden. A special THANK YOU! to Max, Katherine and all the little Dubanskys from Back Bone Food Farm. Once again this year they have provided the plants and seeds for my garden. Some of the staples and a few things that will be identified when grown. For me the best thing is these plants are all organic planted in my completely organic plot. It was very close to 9:00 pm when I wen to check the garden. In the fading light of springs last days I discovered 3 small tomatoes on the vine. Don't forget that all the fruits of the farmers labors are coming to the Mountain Fresh Farmers Markets. BURNING DOWN THE HOUSE

FIRE TRAINING FOR THE COMMUNITY DEPARTMENTS

I recently became a member of the Bittinger Volunteer Fire Department. I always took for granted the emergency services in Garrett County. I am proud to give back to the community and have a very deep appreciation for all those who have come before me. I have seen first hand the dedication, efforts, and sacrifices of these men and women who protect and serve the community for FREE. I encourage everyone to think about this when not in a time of crisis and know these services are there when need be. Visit a BBQ or Spaghetti dinner this summer and say your Thank You. Ask your Commissioner what they have done for a Fire Department Lately.
